In 2003, Ladysmith Black Mambazo released their album Wenyukela (Raise Your Spirit Higher). The album was very emotional for the group. In 2002, group leader Joseph Shabalala's wife, Nellie Shabalala, was killed in South Africa. Joseph wrote a series of songs devoted to the idea that in time of tragedy a person's humanity was truly tested. Such a person must find within themselves the ability to rise above their suffering. It would be a time to Raise Your Spirit Higher. The album won the group their second Grammy Award and they toured around the world. This concert, performed in London's St Paul's Cathedral, was a very emotional event for the group. It was by special invitation that the group were allowed to have this concert in England's most famous church. St Paul's Cathedral was built in the late 1600's and finished in 1711. It has held many important events for the people of England. The remarkable acoustics embraced the group's beautiful harmonies. This recording captures that important concert on June 24, 2004. We hope you enjoy it.
